Youth Group "en route" to Germany!!! Akron German Family Society

With much excitement the Youth Group of the Akron German Family Society boarded a bus this morning to begin their travels to Europe! 29 members of the Youth Group, and 5 chaperones, will spend two and a half weeks traveling throughout Europe including Germany, Hungary, Austria, and Budapest. They will perform German, Hungarian, and American dance programs as well as a German singing program. Impressive to say the least!

It has been over 6 years in planning, hundreds of hours of weekly dance practices, German language lessons, working the Youth Group booth at the Old European & Bierfest and Oktoberfest in fundraising to reach this special day and point of GO!
Without the many people that have helped support this trip it wouldn't be possible.
THANK YOU to all of you that have purchased the thousands of pounds of homemade sausage! All proceeds benefited this trip and great life experience for the Youth Group!

Be on the lookout for future articles with updates and pictures of their travels!

Old European Days & Bierfest 2016...(Pictures Part 1)...Akron German Family Society

Perfect weather makes for the beginning of a great outdoor event and especially for our 2016 Old European Days & Bierfest at the Akron German Family Society. It was truly a record breaker in so many ways. We saw such large crowds on Saturday June 25th and Sunday June 26th during the fest.
This is the second largest event held at the German Family Society, behind the Oktoberfest to be held in the Fall on Friday through Sunday September 9th-11th. Thousands were in attendance enjoying live bands, both inside the hall and outside under the pavilion, eating delicious homemade meals of sausage, schnitzel, sarma or cabbage rolls, potato salad, and sauerkraut. Our very own dessert house or kuchen haus, had just about every homemade dessert you could imagine from homemade black forest cake, bee hive cake to various strudels and much more. You were always greeted with a welcome and smile from hundreds of volunteers.
What better place to enjoy your favorite German beer than our outside beer garden, or bier garten as known in Germany. The wine tasting booth has an outstanding array of German and European wines to enjoy as well. The new lighting throughout the grounds added a special glow and ambiance to all of the festivities. The hammerschlagen or hammer and nail pounding game, youth group and junior youth booths were special and unique for many of all ages. The Jagermeister booth as well as the beer keg tapping are unique to our events. The keg tapping gathers a large crowd that joins in a parade following behind our according player, Fred Leipold, to the bier garten for the keg tapping.
With great pride, the Akron German Family Society may be the only German Club in the United States that is solely ran by volunteers. This makes for a club comprised by those dedicated for the purpose of continuing the German heritage and not for monetary compensation. The hard work is enjoyed by so many and makes for an easy task when so many freely volunteer. There are always new members that rise to the invitation to help. From this, close friendships among young and old develop through many generations.
