"I came out to help with the Sarma", Jill.....a new volunteer Akron German Family Society

The Kitchen volunteers came out in large numbers in support of preparing thousands of Sarma (cabbage rolls) for our upcoming Old European Days & Bierfest. I was there to help and take part in this decades long tradition of making handmade Sarma or more commonly known as "cabbage rolls".
Taking place this past week on Tuesday June 17th, we began at 9 am and the majority of volunteers were finished around 3 pm. Helga Hippich is the kitchen coordinator and quickly found a spot for me to join in.

I, as well as all of the volunteers, were welcomed with many smiles and people saying "it's so nice to see you, thank you for coming, you're going to have fun......"
I began helping to prepare the cabbage leaves for trimming, stuffing, and rolling. I also enjoyed helping others in making the sauce and sauerkraut. Looking around the kitchen, I counted well over 20 people that were cutting the onions, mixing the meats, adding the spices, and doing the necessary pots and pans. For anyone that has volunteered, one of the first things that you might consider is, "will I be welcomed, am I needed, will I be invited into the conversations?" The answer to those questions is a resounding "yes". People are welcomed and appreciated for taking the time to join in.

I saw a younger lady, whom I have not met, that was helping in the kitchen and I walked over to introduce my self. Her name was Jill, and she proceeded to tell me that she saw our articles online requesting volunteers and felt compelled to come out and help. She went on to say that she and her family are new to the area and have a German background. She thought it would be nice to take part and meet some members. She was new and I could see many smiles as she worked, from her helping and joining in the conversations as well as from the others around her enjoying her company. That's fantastic that Jill came out to help and that she and her family wishes to join as new members!

The ladies in the kitchen have a level of experience over many decades and generations making these homemade German foods and specialties. To be welcomed into this tradition was very nice. I have participated in various volunteer activities in the past, as I'm sure you have as well, but to feel a genuine connection with the "seasoned" workers was tremendous. I promise all that come out to partake in the many volunteer needs of the Akron Family German Society, that you will see many smiles, handshakes, and always a great hug from the appreciative team at Akron GFS. Das ist gut!
Please, mark your calendars for our Old European Days & Bierfest to be held next Saturday June 28th and Sunday June 29th.

Come out and join in the fun! The below dates, between 9 am and 3 pm, are currently planned to make the delicious Schnitzel, Sarma, potato salad etc....

Akron GFS "On-The Air" with Dr. Joe Wendel of The German - American Radio Show

Rudy Stagl, the President of Akron German Family Society, and I were guests and interviewed on The German - American Radio Show in Cleveland, Ohio.

Dr. Joe Wendel, the decades long host of the the German - American Radio Show was kind, funny, and gracious during our 60 minute recording. We also enjoyed a thorough tour of the radio station. Once inside Dr. Wendel's studio, Rudy and I sat in front of a panel of extensive digital recording equipment, monitors, and mics.

Dr. Wendel was a master interviewer as he asked thought provoking questions to each of us, while intertwining German Music favorites. Rudy shared a very nice background of the Akron German Family Society with it's earlier club beginnings in the Akron area. Also, he shared his own personal family connection to our club in addition to our upcoming events, specifically of our Old European Days & Bierfest and Oktoberfest.

I had the pleasure of sharing, serving as the German Newspaper and Akron German Family Society Blog writer how my family became connected with Akron GFS and involved in many areas, including dancing. Many fond memories came flowing as I shared how our club has grown with many new members from our many club activities, social networking including our Facebook page, blog, and website. Our members become connected to such a rich German culture and heritage.

***Please, join in listening to the Akron German Family Society's radio interview to be broadcast this Saturday June 21st from 8-9 pm on WCPN 90.3 FM and on Sunday June 22nd from 10 AM to Noon on WCSB 89.3
Rudy and I had a great time at this radio interview and look forward to doing more.

Dr. Wendel is on the radio every Saturday and Sunday during the above times and stations. You will enjoy his charisma!
